Sometimes, when we’re watching
a movie in the theater, or sitting
on the couch, she pulls my arm
close and holds it, little hands,
until it’s numb, or buries her head
in my shoulder during a scary part.
Or, when something catches her,
she laughs a deep guffaw, disarmed,
beside me. Whatever is happening
on the screen, I miss, sitting there,
arm out of place beside her. I’ve made
it through so much I hope you never
see. How lucky am I to be here
with you, watching you enjoy yourself.
